The undergraduate students of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, in Juja, yesterday took to demonstrate over the rampant cases of insecurity in the area. For the past year or so, students have been brutally assaulted, mugged and maimed in the process, with one case escalating to murder, where a 1st year student was stabbed to death in an attempted robbery as early as 7:30pm. The head of JKUSA(the student governing council ) in a morning interview with Kiss 100 today, mentioned that he has held several board meetings with the school administration and the police force in the area as well but in vain. No tangible measures to prevent insecurity have been seen so far.
The demonstrating students were met with police brutality. One 4th year student by the name Allan was senselessly beaten and locked up with serious injuries, without any immediately medical attention. Some local goons masquerading as boda boda riders and local business men, took to teaming up with the police in harassing the students. One student was seen manhandled and dipped inside a sewage by several unidentified locals. The men in uniform went to the extent of using live bullets. In the course of the night, one police officer was spotted banging onto a student’s residential apartment gate and opening fire.
Several injuries have been reported. The head of JKUSA, Clinton Osoro, confirmed that one student has been admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital with a spinal cord injury whilst another one incurred a head injury . More cases are still undocumented. Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi together with the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, have mentioned that firm and decisive action shall be taken against any officer who used excessive force.
