“I have a dream”….. These were the words of the ending of a public speech by the civil rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr in August 1963. He moved the American audience when and the world with his audacity to believe that the African American people would one day have equal rights to the white people in the United States of America. Former US President Barrack Obama also moved the world with his book ‘Audacity of Hope’, captioned as ‘Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream’ as part of his keynote address at the 2004 Democratic Convention which was part of his Presidential campaign. Both these legendary men call every person out to take up their responsibility in achieving the dream within them for the future that they want by cultivating common ground towards success.
Mr. Isaac Bugeri is a true example of the ‘African Dream’. As the founder of various organizations that serve to promote and offer more to Africa and its people, his efforts, hard work and commitment cannot go unnoticed. Established in 2011, upon his completion of secondary school education in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he was astounded by the reality that approximately 38,000 of the students that had completed their Secondary Education that year had no hope to secure employment. This led to the creation of BAO Foundation (Building Africa’s Opportunities Foundation) in Goma city in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The core aim of BAO Foundation is to encourage pursuit of positive change through education, entrepreneurship and mindset change, all leading back to community development and sustainability. This coveted opportunity targets under privileged students mainly in East and Central Africa seeking to follow their dreams and play their part in changing the lives and those around them in future.
In Kenya, the need for sustainable job creation is dire and as President Uhuru Kenyatta promised when he took office in 2013 to create 1.3 million jobs, succeeding with a shortfall of 200,000 (Kimanthi, 2017), this signifies the need for initiative by the youth to not only wait for the jobs to be created for them, but for them to act and create income opportunities for themselves and others.
Isaac’s leadership has opened doors for him while pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree in Peace & Conflict and Diplomacy at USIU Africa in Nairobi, Kenya. As the Chair of HOJA Youth Summit, a youth action platform that plans to bring together at least 600 delegates from African countries to discuss and network on restoring Africa’s sustainable development through peace and conflict resolution, trade, energy, health, sanitation and education. The youth team is passionate about a new Africa and has been working with the local Government institutions e.g KEPSA (Kenya Private Sector Alliance), IYEPA (Inter-County Young Entrepreneurs and Professionals Association) in Kenya and other international institutions e.g ACP Young Professionals Network towards this goal.
Mr. Bugeri also wears the hat of Founder of Isacom Group of Companies that targets digital expansion to the rural areas and through this, the group of companies hopes to offer internet connectivity solutions to help those in Africa and beyond enjoy their global citizenship. Also, part of their role in digital connectivity is offering relevant solutions to organizations to help them enjoy productivity and online based business procedures as most organizations ‘go green’ and seek to offer their clients real time services. Isacom Group is keen on leveling the privileges between those in urban and rural areas ad Mr. Bugeri believes that the youth are the much-needed voice to speak up and act for their communities and be drivers of the transformational change they would like to see.
Poverty alienation, peace and conflict resolution in Africa are the core of Isaac’ s dream for Africa. He is notably intentional towards a new Africa and his charisma and focus set him apart for the untapped possibilities of the future of Africa, made a reality. To all African youth, no matter your dream, your actions are what give life to it and your efforts keep it alive. Africa’s dream will be achieved by those like Isaac Bugeri who believe that one life changed is the hope for generations to come.
