The context of depression in Africa is still regarded a foreign concept but is a rising problem predominant with the youth, and people who have grown up in straining environmental conditions.Nonetheless,there is still a lot of stigmatization towards people with depression.Moreover, myths about depression in Africa hinder proper attention that should be given to depressed persons.
This is a symptom of getting depression.
Nonetheless , high poverty levels ,exposure to violence and neglect and loneliness are also a contributing factor to Depression.
Depression can be confusing at first.
There are myriads of treatments in regards to depression that feature from:
Medication where the affected persons are issued with anti depressants to modify the brain chemistry .An improvement should be noted within the period of the first fortnight .However ,when little or no improvement is noted ,the psychiatrist is allowed to alter the prescription to a substitute anti-depressant.In most cases psychiatrist recommend patients to continue taking medication up to six or more months after symptoms have improved .
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) :This treatment is administered to patients with severe depression with whom prior medication has not been effective .For two to three times a week, the brain is electrically simulated while the patient is under anesthesia for a period of six to twelve months .
Psychotherapy is almost the most common mode of treatment where “talk “sessions are held with patients suffering from mild depression to severe depression as a supplement to antidepressants.Cognitive behavioral Therapy (CBT)a problem solving therapy that aims at helping a person recognize distorted thinking and then change behaviors and thinking,has been found effective over the years.Therapy sessions can either be administered to individuals or couples .
Depending on the severity of the depression,significant change could take a few weeks or a longer period of about ten to fifteen sessions.
Depression is real but should not be a death sentence .This problem can be resolved!
