KNCCI officials with members of the business community during the Siaya County Business Forum
KNCCI on Thursday 31st May 2018 held the Siaya County Chapter Chamber open day at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga grounds in Bondo town under the theme “Promoting and Empowering SMEs through Sustainable Growth.”
Speaking at the forum representatives from KNCCI and the Chamber business community headed by the National Vice Chairman James Mureu urged the County Government to enforce compulsory membership for all businesses in the County before engaging in any business with the County Government. The governor concurred with KNCCI that the Chamber be given the mandate to register and vet suppliers and contractors before tendering with County Government moving forward.
Both the County Government and KNCCI agreed to collaborate with the Siaya Chamber Chapter to train SMEs and cooperatives on best business practices as well as to channel the SMEs loans through the Chamber with a compulsory Chamber membership as part of the requirements in accessing these loans.
On the Jua Kali sector, the County Government was urged to support the formalization of the Jua Kali association to build a credible businesses and empower the artisans as well as to develop facilities such as lighting systems, road networks, drainage systems which would promote a 24-hour economy and improve the working environment for the artisans. KNCCI also urged the Siaya County Government to facilitate title deeds for the Jua Kali land that has been grabbed by private developers. KNCCI further lobbied for the establishment of the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) branch to provide skills development and accreditation for the Jua Kali artisans in the County.
Both KNCCI and the County Government further agreed to spearhead the establishment of exhibition centers in the County to provide a platform for businesses to showcase locally produced products as well as link business to the international markets especially the local products.
Siaya County Government was also urged to establish cooling storage facilities for fishermen and fisher-mongers, partner with the Chamber in undertaking County Investment Conference and to strengthen the participation of Siaya County Government in targeted trade missions which will open avenues for attracting and retaining both domestic and foreign investors.
